Wing is a MacGregor 65. Developed by Roger MacGregor for competition in the TransPac race. There were about 125 of the model's manufactured. They were built in Costa Mesa California. We purchased the boat in 1989. Jim Tate and I traveled to California to visit the plant and take a trial ride on a MacGregor 65. We were sold. We bought the boat and had it delivered to Annapolis by truck. We drove over to Annapolis to see it come into the marina. It was quite a sight. The first summer we took the boat to New England, including Maine. It was a great trip.
Wing then traveled to the Virgin Islands for charter during the winter. Jim and a crew took the boat down and then in the spring we went to St. Thomas and brought the boat back to the US.
Wing was entered in a previous Annapolis to Bermuda race with Jim as Skipper. She placed somewhere in the middle of the pack. The only other race Wing has been entered in was a Governor's Cup race that goes from Annapolis to St. Mary's (the two cities that have been the Capitol of Maryland).
Wing has been as far North as Halifax, Nova Scotia and as far south as Grenada. Wing has been to the New England area several times over the years.
All of our family have had great times on Wing. It has been a wonderful boat for great family times.
On this upcoming Bermuda Ocean Race, all of the crew will be related to one another in some way. We will have three generations on board.
This last year saw a lot of reconditioning of Wing. Her topsides were painted, the mast and boom completely redone and painted, and we are in the process of making some nice interior upgrades. We added a new staysail to go along with the new Genoa that was added last year. She will look better than ever.
